infection by a water-dwelling trematode worm (genus Schistosoma ). They can burrow through skin in 15 minutes or so, causing "swimmer's itch", then parasitize bood vessels causing bood loss and tissue damage. The alternate host is a snail, and trematodes are endemic in slow-moving tropical waters in Africa, Asia, and Madagascar.
