The standard deviation divided by the mean, multiplied by 100. C.V.= (s/v)x100. Used to standardize and then compare the variation between organisms of different sizes since variation tends to be a function of size; sensitivity to statistical error, especially in the mean, limits its use (see ratios below) (Pimentel, 1979).
