Cycas thouarsii , a cycad of the spiny South, whose (fermented?) sap is drunk by Malagasy with no bad effect. Its effect on Europeans (who seem to have no resistance to it) is to produces gout (an accumulation of uric acid in the blood and insoluble urates in the joints) and other painful consequences.
