A hypothesis to explain the constant average survivorship of species with respect to prior duration. For a given group of species (within an adaptive zone), the environment is constantly deteriorating, in terms of the organisms' adaptations, because of changes both in the physical environment and in the adaptations of other organisms. Thus, mean fitness is postulated to fluctuate randomly, such that any species is equally likely to become a candidate for extinction.
