Two Welsh missionaries, David John and David Griffith, with Radama's personal help, gave malagasy a written language, which they promptly used to produce a Bible. The New Testament was complete by 1826, but Radama died in 1828 and was succeeded by more traditional rulers who did not ecourge Christianity.
