the London Missionary Society. Radical Nonconformists, the LMS was invited by King Radama II c. 1810, to send all possible missionaries, as long as they were also skilled workers. Two Welsh missionaries, David John and David Griffith, with Radama's personal help, gave malagasy a written language, which they promptly used to produce a Bible. The New Testament was complete by 1826, but Radama died in 1828 and was succeeded by more traditional rulers who did not ecourge Christianity.
