Multivariate techniques that allow a concise, yet visually easy to grasp, look at very complex data sets. PCA is an ordination technique. Although ordination might reveal groups in the data, it does not maximize variation between groups - that is done with discrimination (or discriminant analysis). Using first ordination, then discrimination, provides a powerful way to describe variation in a data set.
