the earliest inhabitants of Madagascar, once thought to be pre-Indonesian aboriginals, but now recognized as Malayo-Polynesians pushed inland by later arrivals. Mythically, their tombs have become pilgrimage sites, and they are thought to haunt certain rocks and springs. They are the ancestral guardians of the soil, and must be very upset by what is happening to their country!
